With the theme: "Indigenous Peoples and confronting the setbacks of the Bolsonaro government from October 11 to 16, 2021, the V assembly of the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land was held at the Indigenous Territorial Surveillance and Monitoring Post on April 26, 77, in the Serras region. And between the 12th and 13th, the construction of the consultation protocol of the Baixo Cotingo, Serras, Surumu and Raposa ethno-regions was carried out together with the legal advisors of the Indigenous Council of Roraima - CIR, Junior Nicácio, Ivo Cípio and Maria Luiza.
Junior Nicácio, legal advisor of the CIR, one of those responsible for the preparation of the protocol with the IT, spoke a little about the importance of it and its construction.
"The consultation protocol is a demand from the communities, considering the proposal for large projects planned for Raposa Serra do Sol, such as the construction of the Cotingo hydroelectric plant, in the Tamanduá community. The leaders recalled that they were implemented without the due consultation process, such as the installation of military bases and the headquarters of the municipalities. The objective of the protocol is to show the Brazilian state that indigenous peoples must be respected and their decisions must be considered at the time of presentation and construction of any project or legislative measures that may directly or indirectly affect their lands." The advisor argued.
The indigenous peoples of Raposa Serra do Sol are building the procedure that must be respected to guarantee their rights: the consultation protocol, which must be prior, free and informed, in good faith, culturally appropriate about all actions, projects and undertakings that may affect the communities of the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land.
The leaders carefully mapped the threatened and degraded areas, sacred places and preservation areas where they cannot be destroyed, deforested and polluted by projects that affect indigenous lands and rights
"The mapping of our Land is important for us, it is mapping everything that is on our land, sacred places, the rivers, and we are going to put everything in this document to guarantee our rights." He quoted Pedro Souza, from the Raposa region of the Guariba community.
