It has been almost two months since the regional coordination of the National Indigenous Peoples Foundation (FUNAI) in Roraima and the Eastern District of Roraima (DSEI/RR) have been without their titular coordinators. These are important Federal bodies in the execution of public policies, in the area of health, and territorial protection, among other urgent actions.
Historically, both bodies have been filled by political appointees, mainly from Roraima's parliamentarians. With the new government, the indigenous movement of Roraima nominated two individuals to occupy the coordination positions. Marizete Macuxi was nominated for FUNAI, and Zelandes Patamona for DSEI-L, both from the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Territory. The names of these leaders were ratified at the 1st Unified Assembly of Indigenous Health and Education, held in the Barro community from February 12th to 18th.
The Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR) hopes that the names indicated will be considered by the federal government, and requests swift action. The delay is hindering actions in the territories. It is important to emphasize that President Lula created the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples to fill these spaces and strengthen public policies for indigenous peoples.
