The Federal Police (PF) and the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) destroyed, last Thursday (16), mining materials seized by indigenous leaders of the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land (TIRSS).
The materials were seized by the leaders of the T.I RSS during the monitoring and territorial surveillance work on April 1http://cirinstitucional1.hospedagemdesites.ws/site/2020/04/02/comunidades-indigenas-fazem-retiradas-de-garimpeiros-da-terra-indigena-raposa-serra-do-sol/. with the objective of curbing illegal mining in the territory, and the entry of unauthorized people and other crimes.
According to the coordinator of the region, Aldenir Cadete Wapichana, at the time of the seizures, the PF collected testimonies about the action of the leaders and the four miners who were detained on the day of the incident.
"The PF and IBAMA came and destroyed the materials learned in our action that took place on April 1. The illegal activity was degrading the environment and polluting the Cotingol River with diesel oil," said the leader.
In addition, he highlighted that the action had the support of indigenous agents from the Territorial Protection and Surveillance Group (GPVIT) of the Serras and Baixo Cotingo region and stressed that the surveillance will be indefinite.
Also according to the coordinator, the PF and IBAMA highlighted that "there is no law that regulates mining on indigenous land and, therefore, the activity is prohibited."
