The Extraordinary Meeting of the Organization of Indigenous Teachers of Roraima (OPIRR) began today (20), at Malocão Natalia da Silva Mecias, at the Insikiran Institute, of the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR), with the theme “Strengthening a Differentiated Indigenous School Education”.
The general coordinator of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), Edinho Batista, participated in the debate panel that removes the right of indigenous organizations to vote in the selection of the leadership of the Insikiran Institute for Indigenous Higher Education at the Federal University of Roraima.
On that occasion, the coordinator recalled that the institute is the result of the struggle of indigenous leaders, and reinforced the importance of consulting the organizations in the selection of the institute's leadership.
"With the presence of the organizations and the university rector, it's a good time for dialogue, to resolve the problem, bring this debate to the council, and put an end to this resolution," the coordinator concluded.

The rector of the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR), Geraldo Ticianele, was present at the meeting and, after listening to the concerns of those present on the matter, he clarified that it is possible to include a single paragraph in the approved resolution regarding the selection of directors, an amendment that deals specifically with the election of Insikiran.
“We understand the importance of the participation of indigenous peoples in the selection of their peers, so it is up to the organizations or the insikiran themselves to prompt the president of the council to bring the proposed changes to a vote by the university council at the next meeting.”
For two days (20 and 21), important topics related to indigenous school education will be debated, such as the new high school curriculum, the new curriculum matrix, and the creation of the state secretariat for indigenous school education.
The state coordinator of the Organization of Indigenous Teachers of Roraima (Opir), Rosivânia Demétrio, said that this is a moment to strengthen the organization. "This extraordinary event comes to strengthen us, to show that the spaces we have conquered were through much struggle by our leaders, and we cannot go backwards; our organizations are our foundations."
