According to the coordinator of the Serra Region, Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, Mr. Aldenir Cadete, informed that there was no conflict between the Maturuca and Caraparú III communities, as denounced by Senator Telmário Mota, according to an article published on April 1 (https://folhabv.com.br/noticia/CIDADES/Interior/Senador-denuncia-conflito-em-area-indigena/64310).
What happened was a regional surveillance and monitoring activity of the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, in the fight against illegal mining in the Sumauma creek on the Cotingo River near the Caraparú III community, carried out by the leaders of the 79 communities in the region of the Serras and Baixo Cotingo.
Non-indigenous miners were detained and all material used for this criminal activity was seized. The case was reported and will be forwarded to FUNAI, Federal Police, IBAMA Army and MPF for the necessary measures.
In the article, the Senator states "The conflict would be due to the possibility of coronavirus contamination in the region, which would be worrying the Indians who closed the communities and who are isolated”. As everyone knows, we are facing the pandemic of the new coronavirus, Covid-19 in Brazil,as a result, the leaders are closing access to the communities and prohibiting the movement of people, following the recommendation of the Ministry of Health, with the support of the Uiramutã army platoon. We reiterate that there was no conflict between the communities mentioned by the Senator.
