The Indigenous Council of Roraima-CIR, which has been working in defense of the rights of indigenous peoples for fifty years, repudiates yet another attempt to violate the constitutional rights of indigenous peoples. In the midst of so many attacks, they have now resurrected PL 490/2007, which proposes the approval of a substitute for PL 6818/2013, one of the attached bills, in which it inserts a series of restrictions on the rights of recognition and usufruct of indigenous lands. PL 490/2007, which is scheduled to be discussed in the CCJ of the Chamber of Deputies this Wednesday (26), is a serious threat to the constitutional rights of indigenous peoples because it transfers the competence of the Executive Branch to demarcate indigenous lands to the National Congress, which has a ruralist majority. The indigenous population fears another wave of invasions, loss of territories conquered with much effort and blood, and greater pressure on areas still in the process of demarcation. The CIR is against the approval of PL 490/2007, and repudiates any form of revocation of the constitutional right to freedom and social well-being of the indigenous peoples of the state of Roraima and Brazil.
