The Indigenous Council of Roraima - CIR, an indigenous organization, under the terms of arts. 231 and 232 of the Federal Constitution, representing 247 communities, with a population of more than 50 thousand indigenous people in the state of Roraima, is made publicREPUDIATEthe invasion and threat to the residents of the Pium indigenous community, Tabaio region, municipality of Alto Alegre committed by miners who continue to invade the Yanomami Indigenous Land to practice illegal mining.

We received information that on January 13, 2021, miners invaded the community and issued death threats against residents, accusing them of having appropriated "fuel carotes", "a backpack with money" and "documents" that would have been lost when the boat carrying the material for the illegal mining capsized.

In a threatening tone, the miners said that: "THE RESIDENTS HAD TO TAKE CARE OF THE MATERIALS", because "IN HIS HOUSE WERE THE MINERS AND THE SECURITY OF THE MINING PARTNERS", and that "IF HE DID NOT RETURN THE MATERIAL, THE RESIDENTS WOULD SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES". It is not new that the CIR has been denouncing these criminal practices. And we emphasize that such acts are stimulated by speeches by parliamentarians and legislative proposals, as is the case of the Law (former PL 201/2021), pending sanction by the governor.

This is the reality in several communities in the state of Roraima, where the invaders feel "empowered" to continue committing crimes against indigenous peoples and destroying the environment. We know that the Tabaio region is a route for miners who use the roads and the Uraricoera River to enter the Yanomami Indigenous Land, where they continue to destroy the environment, biodiversity, mainly with the use of mercury, without being punished and without effective action by the Brazilian State, which is incapable of protecting and ensuring respect for all the assets of indigenous peoples, as required by the Federal Constitution.

It is not with the approval of a law that there will be "peaceful removal of miners from indigenous areas", but rather an increase in invasions and crimes against those who continue to fight in defense of an ecologically balanced environment, a fraternal, pluralistic and unprejudiced society, as well as the well-being of all. We are not against development, but against the way in which development policy is intended to be carried out. While the world is concerned about climate change and in search of an environmental solution, the authorities approve a law that will bring more deforestation of forests and the destruction of biodiversity.

In view of this, we ask Public Security agencies to adopt urgent measures to protect indigenous communities, who are most vulnerable during the Pandemic, and to remove all miners who remain in Indigenous Lands, leading to destruction and polluting rivers with mercury.
