'No to the time frame!': leaders continue to mobilize in Roraima for the right to land

The Uprising for the Land Movement in Roraima continues to mobilize this Tuesday (29) for the seventh day in the Sabiá community, on the BR-174 highway. The protest, which is peaceful, takes place at km 666 that crosses the Sabiá community, within the São Marcos Indigenous Land. At the blockade, hundreds of leaders, women, men, young people, the elderly and children from the 7 peoples of Roraima Wapichana, Macuxi, Sapará, Patamona, Yanomami, Yekuana, Wai Wai, Sapará and Taurepang are gathered.

The thesis is an interpretation defended by ruralists and sectors interested in the exploitation of indigenous lands and violates the constitutional rights of the peoples. According to the thesis, communities would only have the right to land if they were in their possession on October 5, 1988, the date of the promulgation of the Constitution. Alternatively, if they were not on the land, they would need to be in a legal dispute or in a proven material conflict over the area on the same date.

The other reason for the demonstration is thePL-490 that was approved on the 23rdin the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) of the Chamber of Deputados.Se approved, the Bill will make demarcations unfeasible, allow the annulment of Indigenous Lands and open them up to predatory enterprises, such as mining, roads and large hydroelectric dams.

In addition to the protest in Roraima, leaders of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR) participate in the national mobilization in Brasilia, the Uprising for the Land. There are about 850 people, from 43 different peoples, from all regions of the country in protest to say enough to the setbacks in the rights of indigenous peoples in Brazil.
