The organizing committee of the II Unified Assembly of the Indigenous Movement of Roraima, held on the 7th, 8th and 9th, in the indigenous community of Tabalascada, Serra da Lua region, published this Friday (14), the letter addressed to public authorities in the health, education and indigenous policy sectors.
During the Assembly, which had as its theme "Unifying the Protagonism of the Indigenous Peoples of Roraima in Health, Education and Funai/RR", the indigenous movement evaluated the coordination of the indigenous managers appointed at the 1st Assembly (2023), who assumed positions in the Regional Coordination of the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai), the Special Health District of Eastern Roraima (Dsei-L/RR) and the State Department of Indigenous Education (DEI), in addition to evaluating the progress in the proposals submitted to the public sectors.
In March 2023, Marizete de Souza took over the coordination of Funai/RR, becoming the first indigenous person to occupy the indigenous affairs agency. Similarly, Zelandes Alberto Oliveira became the district coordinator of Dsei-Leste/RR, and Leonardo Pereira assumed the direction of the Department of Indigenous Education, included in the State Secretariat of Education.
In the letter, which contained over one hundred approved resolutions, the movement highlighted several advancements, primarily the achievement of land rights, one of the main demands of the indigenous movement for decades. They emphasized as progress the presence of indigenous leaders in the communities, dialogue, partnerships, and the implementation of actions, even with various challenges in public administration and the lack of sufficient resources to meet indigenous demands.
They also approved changes in the coordination of the Eastern District of Roraima (Dsei-L/RR), appointing Mario Nicacio to assume the next administration, replacing the current coordinator, Zelandes Patamona, as well as other sectors of indigenous health. They reaffirmed the appointment of Marizete de Souza to coordinate Funai/RR and Leonardo Pereira to head the Department of Indigenous Education, and other appointments in indigenous education in the state.
For decades, one of the struggles of the indigenous movement in Roraima has been to occupy spaces that provide public policies aimed at indigenous peoples, mainly in the areas of indigenous health and education, as well as the only Brazilian indigenous agency, the National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai), in order to enforce the specific and differentiated rights guaranteed in the Brazilian Federal Constitution.
