Indigenous leaders and organizations in Roraima file a document against the approval of the Bill on environmental licensing of mining

Leaders and five indigenous organizations from Roraima formalized a complaint against Bill 201/2020 authored by the state government. The letter, which was delivered to the Federal and State Public Prosecutors on Wednesday (20) and Thursday (21), repudiates the approval of the Bill that provides for licensing of mines without any prior environmental impact study.

The document is signed by leaders of the regions and by the organizations Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), Organization of Indigenous Teachers of Roraima (OPIRR), Association of Indigenous Peoples of the São Marcos Indigenous Land (APITSM), KAPOI and Council of the Ingaricó Indigenous People.

"The right to an ecologically balanced environment is a fundamental right of everyone and it is everyone's duty to defend and preserve it for the present and future generations," reads an excerpt from the letter.

On the occasion, leaders also denounced threats that the Pium community, Tabaio region, municipality of Alto Alegre, has been receiving from miners who work illegally on the Uraricoera River in the Yanomami Indigenous Land. And they highlighted the increase in the flow of miners within the territories and threats against indigenous leaders, after the approval of the Law.

"We want the Public Prosecutor's Office to interfere. This publication ends up strengthening the invasion of miners, so much so that after this approval the Pium community has already suffered threats by people who pass to the mines in Yanomami Land", highlighted Edinho Batista, deputy coordinator of the CIR.

At the meeting with the State Public Prosecutor's Office, the leaders also reported their concern about the decrease in vaccine doses intended for indigenous communities and asked for measures.
