Indigenous Youth

Indigenous youth from the Serra da Lua region held a seminar on the theme "Watering our seeds and strengthening our roots" on the 30th and 31st of this month. The event took place in the Canauanin indigenous community and was attended by approximately 180 people.

The seminar is an initiative of young people who saw the need to discuss sensitive topics within their communities, such as depression, suicide, self-harm, teenage pregnancy, as well as issues of national importance.

According to Júlio Augusto, the local coordinator of Indigenous Youth from the Macuxi people, the young people's entertainment comes from community projects.

"This seminar is to engage this youth and open their eyes to so many wonderful things. Like today with the pepper-in-the-eye ritual, many participated; we are focused on the grassroots, on this journey no one is alone. And we seek to show the journey of traditional leaders. This is the first action; we want more support, we want people to collaborate with lectures, we will be here with them. Some have negative thoughts, but we are motivating ourselves," stated the coordinator.

On the first day, the 30th, the event included the participation of the coordination of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), the general coordinator Edinho Batista, the general secretary of the Indigenous Women's Movement, Kelliane Wapichana, the state coordinator of Youth, Raquel Wapichana, the Pajé Mariana Macuxi, as well as the legal advisor of the CIR, Ivo Aureliano, and representatives of DSEI LESTE, the Indigenous Territorial Protection and Surveillance Group (GPVTI), among other state agencies.

Young people also organized protests against Bill 490 and the Temporal Framework.
