The team of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR) was today (13) at the barriers installed in the communities, Araçá and São Francisco, Amajarí region, delivering 30 basic food baskets and hygiene kits. Surveillance is carried out by protection agents with the support of the tuxauas.
The agents remain day and night at the entrance to the Araçá Indigenous Land, access to the Araçá community, and at the entrance to the Ouro Indigenous Land, in the community of São Francisco. It is a preventive work, where residents are alerted to the risks of COVID-19.
The indigenous leaders informed that during this period only residents of the community are allowed to enter and leave in essential and urgent cases.
According to the regional coordinator of the Group for the Protection and Surveillance of Indigenous Territories (GPVTI), Elizeu Tenente, the containment barrier at the entrance to the Araçá community is to prevent the coronavirus pandemic, and receiving this support from the CIR is very important for us.
"It is a work to support our community, a means of preventing the infection of our children and the elderly and the community in general. Work of paramount importance within the Araçá community, with the support of the leaders, we have a great dedication to do this work for the benefit of our community", reiterated Elizeu.
Luíza is part of GPVIT in the Araçá community, she said that the fight is for the sake of her people.
"If it's not for us, who will it be for us? We are here protecting the lives of each one of our community. We are here in the fight against coronavirus, we don't want to lose anyone from our community or our family. I left my children behind, I'm here for them, we'll stay here until the end," he declared.
The actions are an initiative of the Indigenous Council of Roraima with support from the FORD Foundation.
