On March 8, we celebrate International Women's Day. On this date, the Women's Department of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), coordinated by tuxaua Kelliane Wapichana, pays a special tribute to all women, especially indigenous women who, with courage and wisdom, defend life, culture and territories.
The regional coordinator of women in the Surumu region, in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, Nailza de Souza, reinforces that this date is an important moment to remember the struggle, resistance and strength of indigenous women.
According to the coordinator, talking about International Women's Day is also remembering that, in many places, indigenous women still suffer violence and face various challenges. Even so, they remain firm in their communities, fighting for respect, dignity and rights.
"We talk about March 8 as an important date, but we also remember that it is not only on this day that we exist. International Women's Day is present in every day of our daily lives", highlights the coordinator.
Indigenous women are guardians of the land and the forest. They are women who carry memory, strength and wisdom in their blood, in their minds and in their hearts. They are living seeds that keep the culture, spirituality and struggle of indigenous peoples alive.
According to Nailza, indigenous women are on the front line in the defense of territories, fighting against threats such as illegal mining and mining, which put the lives of communities and nature at risk.
"We are women who fight to protect our lands, our forests and our waters. We are guardians of life", he says.
On this International Women's Day, indigenous women also express their solidarity with all women who suffer violence and injustice in different parts of the world.
