The Environmental and Territorial Department of CIR participates in a preparatory meeting for COP 28 in Dubai.

The coordinator of the Department of Environmental and Territorial Management (DGTA) of the Indigenous Council of Roraima, Sineia Bezerra do Vale, participated over the weekend, the 27th and 28th, in São Paulo, in the preparatory meeting for the Climate Conference (COP 28). This year, COP 28 will be held from November 30th to December 12th in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai).

At the meeting, which included representatives from other Indigenous organizations in the Amazon, information was shared to better address the issues faced by Indigenous peoples at the COP 28 conference, to be held in Bonn, Germany, from June 5th to 15th. This meeting will present and discuss the losses and damages caused by climate change.

According to Sineia, another issue that will be brought to Bonn is the setback in the demarcation of indigenous lands in Brazil, as is happening with the approval of the Urgency of Bill No. 490, which advocates the Temporal Framework and transfers the demarcation of indigenous lands from the Executive Branch to the National Congress.

"We are going to Germany to discuss this agenda, using the platform for indigenous peoples and local communities. This platform is official for discussions on indigenous issues, and we also receive guidance and contributions from other countries on the topic of indigenous peoples and their rights."

At the meeting in São Paulo, Sineia participated in the panel "The Resumption of PNGATI (National Policy for Territorial and Environmental Management of Indigenous Lands) and the Indigenous Committee on Climate Change." Given the current political climate of resuming the environmental agenda, the meeting was an important moment for strengthening ties and exchanging experiences.

The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) will discuss important measures for environmental protection, such as solutions to mitigate global warming.
