The Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR) delivered this Saturday (11) another 25 basic food baskets and hygiene kits to help the Barro and Surumu communities, at one of the entrances that gives access to the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land, where more than 20 thousand indigenous people live. Both have been isolated since March 29 in order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

The baskets and kits were donated to the leaders of the two communities, who are working 24 hours a day on barriers to contain the circulation of people in the region. They will be maintained until the Ministry of Health advises for the end of social isolation.

"The guidance barrier is a way to provide security for our community. We are concerned about this disease, we warn risk groups and also those who are not part of it, so that they do not leave their community in large quantities". Said Anselmo Dionizio, coordinator of the region.

The general secretary of the women's movement, Maria Betânia Macuxi, was at the delivery of the donation and said that actions are important to protect the communities. For her, the assistance provided by the CIR and the FORD Foundation helps to strengthen the bases.

"The closure of the entrances to indigenous communities is an initiative of the leaders themselves, precisely to protect the lives that live there and what we can do is help them in this fight. In fact, communities have this right to close the places where they are going through critical situations, for the lives of others", highlighted the secretary.

The tuxaua of the Surumu community, Eliesio dos Santos highlighted the importance of the union of peoples in the fight against the pandemic.

"Unity is important, but in this moment we are going through it is very important and that everyone gets involved in the fight against this pandemic", pointed out Santos.
