INDIGENOUS COMMUNICATORS MEET IN RORAIMA TO STRENGTHEN THEIR OWN NETWORKS AND NARRATIVES

The State Meeting of Indigenous Communicators of Roraima, held by the Communication Department of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), began on the morning of last Wednesday (25). With the theme "Our story told by us, strengthening and sharing knowledge", the event takes place on March 25 and 26, 2026, at the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Training and Culture Center, in the Surumu region.

The meeting brings together 30 indigenous communicators from different peoples and regions of the state, with the aim of strengthening the performance of indigenous communication and promoting the exchange of experiences, knowledge and practices. The initiative also highlights the importance of autonomy in the production of content, valuing the narratives of indigenous peoples.

Although indigenous communication is a historical practice among traditional leaders, it was from 2019 that the Wakywaa Indigenous Communicators Network began to receive systematic training through the CIR, consolidating itself as an important space for articulation and training.

According to the coordinator of the CIR's Communication Department, Charles Taurepang, the meeting reinforces cultural diversity and the collective strengthening of indigenous communication."Bringing communicators here from different peoples and regions shows the diversity of our culture and how this reflects on our way of communicating. We have big names built within the communication network, and these meetings strengthen and align our work with the communication department of the Indigenous Council of Roraima", he said.

The event also has the participation of the communicator of the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (Coiab), Pedro Tukano, expanding the dialogue on indigenous communication at the level of the Amazon.

The program includes debates on indigenous communication in the Amazon and Brazil, as well as presentations on the Wakywaa Network. Experiences on the relationship between indigenous communication will also be shared with the participation of communicators such as Mayra Wapichana, Márcia Fonseca and Helena Leocádio.

During the two days, participants follow discussions on the political context of communication, in addition to an exhibition of productions developed in different regions of the state. The meeting also offers practical workshops, addressing topics such as cell phone recording, notions of script and content production for social networks, with facilitators such as Eduardo Rodrigues, Charles Taurepang and Maciel Macuxi.

For communicator Eidisney de Souza, from the Macuxi people of the Maturuca community, in the Serras region, the meeting represents an opportunity to strengthen the work at the grassroots."We are here in search of more knowledge to improve our work, to show the culture of our community, to show our development of our region and to take our voice to the whole world through our indigenous communication, which is very important", he highlighted.

The meeting is organized by the Indigenous Council of Roraima with the support of the Ford Foundation and Nia Tero.
