With the increase in confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the State of Roraima, indigenous communities have closed their accesses, a preventive and immediate action to prevent the virus from spreading to indigenous lands.
The Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), concerned with the communities, has sought solutions in every way to help indigenous peoples face this critical moment. One of the actions is a campaign to receive donations of foodstuffs, hygiene material and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The mobilizations began on April 8 and 9 in the communities of the Serra da Lua region. 92 basic food baskets and hygiene kits were sent to the Protection and Surveillance Agents of the indigenous territories, where they are monitoring the entrances to the communities Jabuti, Tabalascada, Canauani, Campinho, Moskow, Manoá Pium Indigenous Land: new paradise, Manoá, Pium and São João.
The tuxaua of the Moskow community, Carlos Mateus, Wapichana ethnic group, highlighted that the organization's support is very important, as it will help the vigilantes to continue monitoring the indigenous land.
"The support we are receiving will help indigenous security guards who are putting their lives at risk to protect our people," said the leader.
The campaign continues in the coming days, more basic food baskets and kits will be delivered in other regions.
The action is an initiative of the Indigenous Council of Roraima with the support of partners (NIATERO and COIAB) and individuals who donated the protection kit.
