CIR strengthens community monitoring in the Boqueirão Indigenous Land

The Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR) through the Department of Territorial and Environmental Management (DGTA), General Coordinator of the CIR Edinho Batista and the Legal Department, delivered on Wednesday (29) material to support the territorial protection of the Boqueirão indigenous community, Tabaio region, municipality of Alto Alegre. The request, made by the community itself, which is concerned about the advance of illegal mining in the region, was supported by the DGTA's "Territorial and Environmental Monitoring" project.

The TI. Boqueirão monitoring project is the result of a request from the leaders themselves in assemblies and community meetings. To establish support, the CIR participates in regional meetings and always listens to the internal and external problems of the community.

The coordinator of the CIR's DGTA, Sineia do Vale, explained that the need for this monitoring was raised during the construction of the Territorial Management Plan (PGTA) of the Boqueirão Indigenous Land, prepared in 2013.

"Through the PGTA it is possible that today we can support a model monitoring base in the Boqueirão community, combining traditional knowledge of the community and at the same time long-distance radios, drones and cell phones, to compile monitoring data", explained Sineia.

In addition to the territorial monitoring activity, the group will also work on the environmental theme, as well as on the legislation part with the surveillance of the territory. In all, there are four actors who will be working at the base: Law Operators, Territorial Protection and Surveillance Group (GPVIT), Territorial and Environmental Agent and Brigade.

In a report to the CIR, the community's tuxaua, Adonias Moreira, showed concern about the invasion of the territory, along with other leaders. He said that the problem is affecting the community's social organization. The Boqueirão Indigenous Land is located in the northwest of the state, a neighboring region and a gateway to illegal mining regions in the Yanomami Indigenous Land.

"The issue of mining, the invasion of our territory, and the issue of alcoholic beverages have also been affecting our population a lot. And that's why we sought this partnership, to alleviate this situation that the community of Boqueirão has been facing today".
