CIR SENDS DOCUMENT TO THE UN DENOUNCING THE CURRENT SITUATION OF THE RAPOSA SERRA DO SOL INDIGENOUS LAND

On March 1, the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), through its legal advisory, sent a document to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of the United Nations (UN) denouncing the current situation of the indigenous peoples of Raposa Serra do Sol in the face of threats from the current government.

The document addresses the context faced by the indigenous peoples of the T.I RSS in the Bolsonaro government. In summary, the document reports on how the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) is being manipulated against indigenous peoples. About the Roraima Law that allows mining in the State and threats to indigenous peoples and neglect in the face of the pandemic. The document also deals with the application of the Time Frame by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for other T.Is, the increase in mining and environmental degradation, increased threats against indigenous leaders, invasion, hydroelectric project construction in Tamanduá, attempt to regulate mining through Bill 191/2020, and disrespect for the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consultation.

In addition, the document reports the legal uncertainty and pressure on communities caused by the insistence of the National Mining Agency (ANM) to authorize requests for research and mineral mining on indigenous lands without any legal support and in clear disregard for judicial decisions and indigenous rights.

The CIR asks the UN to question Brazil on three points:
What are the actions taken to combat illegal mining in the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Land? What measures have been adopted to protect those of threatened leaders? What measures have been adopted to guarantee the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consultation in the face of bills aimed at implementing mining and large-scale enterprises.

The document is part of a series of actions developed by the CIR to denounce the serious violations of the rights of indigenous peoples before the current government.
