Celebrating 50 Years of CIR

The Indigenous Council of Roraima – CIR will hold its 50th Anniversary Celebration from January 15th to 20th at the Lago Caracaranã Regional Center, Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Territory. The ceremony will present guests with the history of the organization and its leaders, cultural presentations, and a fair of organic produce from indigenous communities.

More than 1000 people are expected, including local and national indigenous leaders, civil entities, supporters, and organizations.

The CIR's area of operation encompasses more than 35 indigenous territories in Roraima, covering an area of over 10 million hectares, and a population of 58,000 indigenous people in 465 communities throughout the state of Roraima, comprising the following peoples: Macuxi, Wapichana, Ingarikó, Patamona, Sapará, Taurepang, Wai-Wai, Yanomami, Yekuana, and Pirititi. The CIR's direct work is carried out through 10 regional councils that form its base, encompassing the following ethno-regions: Serras, Surumú, Baixo Cotingo, Raposa, Amajarí, Wai-Wai, Tabaio, Serra da Lua, Murupú, and Alto Cauamé.

The institution's origins date back to the beginning of the union of traditional leaders of the indigenous peoples of Roraima, who in the mid-1970s were primarily demanding the demarcation of their lands and autonomy in the face of violence, exploitation, and predatory production in their territory, which stemmed mainly from the illegal occupation by farmers and miners.
