After eight months, the emergency campaign to combat Covid-19 of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), has reached the sixth stage. So far, the action has already served indigenous communities in 10 regions, with the delivery of kits for traditional medicine, food baskets, hygiene and cleaning kits, hand sanitizer, facial thermometers, oximeters, personal protective equipment (PPE) and also psychological support.
In March, upon realizing that indigenous peoples would not have an emergency assistance plan from the government to combat the new coronavirus, the CIR, representing 247 indigenous communities in Roraima, began planning a charity campaign with the objective of supporting the initiatives of the communities themselves, such as sanitary barriers, and the intensification of the production of traditional medicine.
"A brilliant initiative of the communities was the creation of sanitary containment barriers on highways, roads and branches that go to the indigenous communities. The work of volunteer agents and indigenous security guards spared no effort to support this activity. There were difficulties, but they were resistant, committed people who faced day and night, in the 39 containment barriers to combat the new coronavirus in indigenous territories", explained the Deputy Coordinator of the CIR, Edinho Batista.
In this sixth stage of the campaign, 435 food baskets were donated, 2. 900 hygiene and cleaning kits, 58 thousand disposable masks, 20 thousand aprons, 1,333 homemade masks, 3 thousand hand sanitizer, 1,000 gloves, 250 face thermometers, and 225 face shields. The regions that received support at this time were Serras, Serra da Lua, Raposa, Murupú, Amajari, Alto Cauamé, Surumu, Tabaio and Baixo Cotingo. The action was supported by the partners of the Malacacheta indigenous community, UNICEF, ERN, NIATERO, RAINFOREST, COIAB and ISA.
