After several mobilizations by the indigenous peoples of Roraima, indigenous organizations and social movements, the Federal Supreme Court (STF), through a decision by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, suspended State Law 1,453/2021, which institutes environmental licensing for mining and authorizes the use of mercury.
The precautionary decision was taken in Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 6672, filed by the Sustainability Network Party, whose party leader is federal deputy Joenia Wapichana.
State law 1,453/2021, now suspended by the STF, is authored by Governor Antônio Denarium, (no party) and was approved by the Legislative Assembly. The measure allowed mining activities using mercury, a substance that is highly toxic to the environment, in addition to ignoring technical studies on environmental impacts.
