The coordinator of the Department of Environment of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), Sineia do Vale, received this Tuesday (26) in Boa Vista (RR) the 2022 Brazilian Women Who Make a Difference award. Granted by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates, the award recognizes outstanding women throughout Brazil.
Indigenous leader and environmental activist, Sineia, who is from the Wapichana people, coordinates the Department of Territorial and Environmental Management of the CIR (DGTA/CIR) since 2008. She has represented Brazilian indigenous peoples in national and international discussions on adaptation and coping with climate change, in addition to working on the development of Territorial and Environmental Management Plans for indigenous lands.
"I am very grateful for this recognition, because it is very good when we carry out actions that change people's quality of life, that help the people in the conquest and guarantee of rights," said Sineia. "For me it is a unique moment over more than 20 years of work at the CIR. It makes a difference and we will continue."
Last year, Sineia spoke at the Leaders' Summit on Climate, organized by the US, at the invitation of US President Joe Biden. Her speech led to the meeting of global leaders, the experience of indigenous communities in confronting global warming, since the CIR works to assess how climate change affects hunting, fishing and the social and cultural life of traditional peoples in Roraima.
