A commission of leaders of the Anzol Indigenous Community was, on the afternoon of last Tuesday (05), in Boa Vista for a meeting with the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), after the court decision that determined the demarcation of the territory in up to five years. The meeting aimed to clarify to the leaders how the process will be conducted and to strengthen the community's accompaniment in the face of a moment considered decisive in the struggle for territorial recognition.
The meeting was attended by the general tuxaua of the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), Amarildo Macuxi, the legal advisor Junior Nicacio Wapichana and the Federal Prosecutor Alisson Marugal.
During the meeting, the prosecutor presented to the leaders the referrals of the judicial process and explained the steps that must be followed until the completion of the demarcation. The monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance with the decision were also addressed.
The court decision represents an important advance for the community, which, since 1982, has been waiting for the demarcation and regularization of its territory, facing situations of land insecurity.
For the tuxaua of the Anzol Indigenous Community, Del Wekelenso Bezerra, the decision was received with great emotion and joy. The community is now seeking to understand how the process will progress.
"We received with great joy the decision of the Court in favor of the demarcation of the Anzol Community. We came today to understand how this process will progress and what the next steps are", explained the tuxaua.
The legal advisor of the CIR, Júnior Wapichana, highlighted the importance of the decision and the close monitoring of the leaders."It is a very important victory for the Federal Regional Court to consider that the communities have the right to the territory of the Anzol Indigenous Land. To be present here is to keep firm the main claim, which is the demarcation of the territory", he said.
The general tuxaua of the CIR, Amarildo Macuxi, highlighted the organization's commitment to accompany and support the community throughout the process.
"For us, guaranteeing the demarcation of the Anzol Indigenous Land is guaranteeing the freedom of our people. The CIR continues to follow closely and we are firm in the defense of the rights of indigenous peoples", Macuxi emphasized.
During the meeting, the leaders also shared their concerns regarding the current situation of the community and reinforced the importance of the process taking place with transparency and respect for the rights of indigenous peoples.
The struggle for demarcation
The struggle for the demarcation of the Anzol Indigenous Land, in the Murupu region, reflects decades of resistance by the Macuxi and Wapichana peoples in the face of the loss of territory and pressure from ranchers.
With more than 70 years of traditional occupation, the community today lives confined to about 2 hectares, after being excluded, in 1982, from the homologation of the Serra da Moça Indigenous Land without prior consultation.
The reduction of the territory was aggravated by the expansion of agroindustry, with acacia mangium plantations, which impacted the environment and intensified conflicts. The scenario also includes reports of violence, such as the burning of community structures and aggressions.
